Why is the ELIOS Blouse Perfect for a Dress?

The ELIOS blouse already has the ideal foundation for a shirtdress: a relaxed yet slightly fitted silhouette, a classic button placket, and an elegant drape. Thanks to its generous width, minimal adjustments are needed to turn it into a chic dress.

How to Extend the Pattern – Step by Step

Before you start, check if the hemline of the blouse is wider than your hip circumference. In most cases, it should be, but a quick check never hurts.

  1. Extend the pattern: Simply trace the front and back pieces down to your desired dress length.

  1. Add extra width for a natural drape: To achieve a beautiful flow, you can add more width at the hem. Cut the front piece from the hem up to the bust dart. Additionally, cut one side of the dart almost to the tip. This allows you to partially close the dart, which in turn adds extra width at the hem for a softer drape.

  2. Adjust the back piece (optional): If you prefer additional width, you can modify the back in the same way. Simply cut from the hem straight up and spread the pattern open to add the desired width. I skipped this step in my version because I already have a naturally defined waist and wanted to maintain the shape. As always, testing is key!

Shaping the Waist for a Feminine Silhouette

Without waist shaping, a shirtdress can sometimes look too boxy. Here are different ways to create a flattering fit:

  • Elasticated waist: A simple way to define the silhouette. Make sure the elastic isn’t too tight to prevent the button placket from gaping. Adding a button at the elastic level can help secure the fit.

  • Belt loops and a belt: My personal favorite! This keeps the fit adjustable, allowing you to decide how tightly you want to wear the dress. You can find the tutorial for belt loops and belts here.

  • Drawstring casing with a cord: A great alternative to a belt for a sporty, casual look. The cord can be adjusted for an evenly gathered waistline.

Small Details that Make the Shirtdress Perfect

Beyond the fit, it’s often the little details that make a garment truly functional and unique:

  • Side seam pockets: Ideal for storing small essentials or just for keeping your hands comfy.

  • Side slits: Improve mobility and add an elegant touch to the dress.

  • The right length: A midi length looks modern and flattering. Of course, you can adjust the length to suit your preference.

Conclusion: A Versatile Must-Have

With just a few modifications, the ELIOS blouse transforms into the perfect shirtdress – timeless, feminine, and adaptable. Simple pattern alterations and thoughtful design choices allow you to tailor it to your needs. Whether with a belt, elastic waist, or drawstring casing – you create the look. Give it a try and craft your new favorite dress!
